Creating a Stunning Koi Fish Pond in Kaloor: A Serene Oasis
This remarkable aquatic haven not only showcases the beauty of these graceful Japanese Koi fish but also incorporates a small garden, skillfully designed to absorb excess nutrients generated by these aquatic residents.
In this article, we’ll take you on a journey through the creation of this captivating Koi fish pond, sharing its features, construction details, and the meticulous care that goes into maintaining it.
A Fishkeeper’s Paradise:
Koi fish lovers understand the joy of having these vibrant creatures as pets. The Koi fish pond in Kaloor not only provides a clean and nurturing environment for its fishy inhabitants but also offers a tranquil retreat for its owners.
Construction and Design:
We designed this Koi fish pond to accommodate 16 stunning Japanese Koi fish, each exceeding 24 inches in size. The pond boasts a generous water volume of 18 cubic meters, inclusive of the biofilter. The construction process spanned eight weeks.
Koi Pond Filter Set Up @ Kaloor Material and Finish:
We built the pond’s structure with reinforced concrete (RCC) and adorned the interior with high-quality glass mosaic tiles. To ensure durability and resistance to algae, we used premium-grade, algae-resistant epoxy to secure the tiles to the plastered RCC shell.
Advanced Filtration System:
The Kaloor Koi pond is equipped with state-of-the-art filtration systems designed for longevity and water clarity. Key highlights include:
- Multi Cyclone system with an easy drain mechanism.
- Biological bed filter.
- Air Diffusers.
- Bottom drain with backwash.
- UV water clarifier (80 watts).
This advanced filtration setup consistently maintains water parameters within the optimal range, maintaining a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5. The biofiltration pump, linked to the UV water clarifier, operates around the clock, ensuring water quality.
Efficient Maintenance:
Mechanical systems require only 5-7 hours of operation daily to eliminate accumulated debris and fish waste.
A high-pressure air compressor, delivering 120 litres per hour, ensures a constant oxygen supply. The UV water clarifier combats harmful bacteria and algae growth, promoting crystal-clear water.
Environmental Responsibility:
Efforts to minimize energy consumption have been successful. Aside from weekly pond cleaning, backwashing the filter system takes just 10 minutes, using a minimal amount of water. Regular water testing and maintenance routines ensure the pond’s health.
Temperature Control:
Floating thermometers closely monitor water temperature, maintaining a comfortable range of 22.5 to 24 degrees Celsius day and night.
Maintenance and Care:
Koi fish ponds differ significantly from typical water gardens, demanding consistent care such as water testing and filter maintenance. A detailed maintenance schedule, including water level adjustments and testing procedures, is provided to the client.
Stocking the Pond:
Before introducing top-quality Indian Koi fish to the pond, we added 18,000 litres of potable water treated with API’s pond water conditioner and de-chlorinator. After confirming safe chlorine levels, we stocked the biofilter with filter media and introduced API’s quick pond start.
Infection Prevention:
To safeguard the fish from infections, a week of quarantine in a separate tank is recommended for all new arrivals. Prior to their integration into the main Koi fish pond, a PP bath or salt bath with carefully measured chemicals is administered, reducing the risk of illness or fatalities.
