Koi Fish Pond in Calicut, Kerala: A Serene Oasis

Designed and meticulously constructed in-house, this Koi fish pond is tailor-made to accommodate 30 exquisite Japanese Koi fish, each measuring 90 centimetres or more.

The pond’s water volume totals an impressive 37 cubic meters, inclusive of the water within the bio-reactor chamber. The filtration system’s key features include a bio-mechanical filter, UV and hydrocyclone pre-filter, and an efficient bio-reactor.

The pond structure itself is crafted using reinforced concrete with 8mm rebar, while the inner lining boasts a Bostik epoxy coating over fine cement plaster to deter surface algae growth.

The concept behind the filtration system was to minimize water loss during backwashing, while also promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. This innovative system comprises several vital components, including a multi-cyclone system with an easy-drain mechanism, a three-stage biological reactor, a 240 LPM aerator with diffusers, and a 300-watt UV water clarifier to control algae growth and sterilize the water.

The primary filter pump is a variable-speed model, allowing for customizable flow rates to meet specific filtration requirements. What’s more, the filtration system can be integrated with home automation, enabling remote monitoring from anywhere in the world.

The bio-mechanical system, complete with a pre-filter, effectively removes deposited dirt and fish debris, ensuring that only clean water is returned to the pond through directional inlets.

Further natural water treatment takes place within the three-stage biofilter chamber, thanks to various beneficial bacteria.

With a total power consumption of just 200 watts, including the motor and UV unit, cleaning the pond is a breeze and takes no more than 10 minutes.

The mechanical filtration system incorporates a multi-cyclone system with a variable flow rate, ranging from 2.5 cubic meters per hour to 18 cubic meters per hour, all facilitated by a quick-drain valve that uses minimal water for cleaning.

This Koi fish pond is seamlessly integrated into the landscape alongside a long driveway, offering an idyllic location for the homeowner and their guests to admire the pet Koi fishes thriving in crystal-clear water.

Not only does this Koi fish pond provide a pristine environment for the fish, but it also creates a picturesque and tranquil spot for the homeowner and their guests to enjoy.

It’s important to note that Koi fish ponds differ significantly from water gardens, as they demand regular care and maintenance, including water testing and routine filter backwashing.

The biological filtration process began with the introduction of a pond starter kit from API, followed by the addition of test fish. Regular water quality checks consistently yielded satisfactory results, with all water parameters remaining within the normal range.

Prior to introducing new fish into the main Koi fish pond, a strict quarantine period of 1 to 2 weeks in a separate or temporary tank is strongly recommended. Adequate aeration is ensured through a high-pressure air compressor delivering 240 LPH to maintain optimal oxygen levels.

To further safeguard the fish from infections, a UV water clarifier has been employed, effectively removing harmful bacteria and viruses while also controlling algae growth, resulting in pristine water clarity.
