Pond Liners For Aquaculture

Pond liners play a crucial role in the success of aquaculture and aquaponics ventures, serving as the protective barrier that keeps water contained.

These liners are typically constructed from plastic derivatives such as HDPE, LLDPE, FPP, PVC, and EPDM, with the manufacturing process involving the bonding of synthetic fabric with a polymer.

Pond Liners for Aquaculture and Aquaponics: PVC vs. HDPE

Two of the most commonly employed pond liners are PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). However, it’s worth noting that low-water-permeable membranes can also be created on-site by applying polymer coatings like polyurea directly onto a geotextile fabric positioned along the pond’s surface.

A well-installed and adequately maintained pond liner can endure for approximately 15 to 20 years. However, this lifespan can drastically decrease if not professionally installed.

PVC pond liners and EPDM pond liners are the preferred choices in aquaponics and aquaculture, particularly for constructing holding tanks for fish or shrimp.

It’s important to emphasize that tarpaulin, often referred to as “tarp,” is not a suitable alternative to PVC pond liners. Tarpaulins, while they may repel water to some extent, are not fully waterproof and thus unsuitable for pond construction.

One of the primary advantages of utilizing PVC or EPDM pond liners for pond construction is cost reduction. PVC pond liners, in particular, offer a cost-effective solution. Additionally, pond liners allow for straightforward repairs through heat welding, ensuring long-lasting durability.

The choice of GSM (Grams per Square Meter) for the liner can vary depending on the type of aquatic life being cultivated. In general, GSM options 120, 160, 180, 200, 220, and 250 are used for pond construction. Various types and colours of pond liners are available, and both PVC and EPDM pond liners are non-toxic for aquatic and plant life.

UV-stabilized liners are typically used for outdoor applications, while non-UV-stabilized liners are suitable for indoor setups where the pond is shielded from direct sunlight.

Adding the appropriate level of UV stabilizers ensures that the liner remains durable even when exposed to sunlight. PVC pond liners, for instance, have a minimum lifespan of 10 years or more.

At KJA&Sons, we specialize in assisting you in selecting the right pond liner for your specific requirements. We can supply various types of liners and provide professional installation services.

The cost of pond liners is influenced by factors such as GSM and the quantity needed. Prices start at Rs 18 per square foot and increase as the GSM rating of the pond liner rises.

In addition to pond liners, we at KJA&Sons offer a wide range of services, including civil and commercial building constructions, swimming pool and koi fish pond installation, landscaping, and paving stone work.

Our expertise also extends to quantity survey, land survey, building valuation, strengthening structures, waterproofing, electrical and plumbing work, and the creation of Thulsi Thara, sculptures, water features, and Koi Fishponds.
